Review

"I have only had this book for one day now and havent had a chance to read through all of it yet, but from just what I have seen so far, I'm very impressed. The history of capoeira is very detailed and the diagrams (although hand drawn) are very informative and reasonably easy to follow. I think this book is great if you're just starting to get into capoeira as it gives you a very good understanding of its origin and the different styles. It even has a glossary of terms in the back to help you understand what's being talked about. I also like the way it breaks all the moves down into steps and even gives you exercises to practice to help perfect the move. All in all, it's a great book."

Learning Capoeira: Lessons in Cunning from an Afro-Brazilian Art

Review

"After you do Capoeira for a while, you start seeing the game in a different way. I used to love people flipping like crazy, or kicks that seemed so absurdly impossible. But after a while, the games philosophical side starts sinking in. Suddenly I prefer a very tight game of capoeira than high flying kicks.

This book really satisfied my thirst for capoeira knowledge. It gives great historical references, although once in a while there's too much analysis involved that makes it very slow to read. It explains the mechanism of jogo de angola very well, and covers several theories as to why the game is as it is today.

A very good book for any capoeiraistas looking for more than just advice on the technical side of capoeira."

Capoeira Conditioning

Review

"It's important to say first of all what this book isn't - despite appearances, it won't teach you how to play capoeira; only a couple of the movements included are kicks, and there's no attempt to explain how movements can be linked into sequences or used in a game. Instead this is a description of exercises drawn from capoeira that could be used on their own by people looking for a different kind of work out (something like a much more dynamic and acrobatic form of yoga), or by capoeiristas looking for ideas of how to build the strength, balance and flexibility needed to develop and learn movements at whatever school or classes you attend.

Every exercise is clearly explained, and the specific benefits of each (strength, balance, flexibility, agility, endurance, fat-burning, etc) are set out, to help people construct training programmes that deliver the results they're looking for.

As a relative newcomer to capoeira (about 9 months experience) I've found this book the most useful reference I've tried so far. The reality is that most full capoeira movements are far too complex or subtle to capture or explain in still pictures, so books that try to teach too much are doomed to fail. In contrast, this book concentrates on simpler movements (supported by some very clear photographs) which work well for training. It's still helpful to know capoeira from classes, but I could imagine a total beginner picking this up and being able to follow 90% or more.

A very good book for any capoeiraistas looking for more than just advice on the technical side of capoeira."

Review

"I have been studing capoeira for a while now, and as soon as i started i searched the internet for anything helpfull in my training and understanding.

That is when i found the large selection on Amazon of capoeira stuff, but this book inperticular, and part one of this double book set as well, titled;'The Little Capoeira Book', both are a must have for beginners in capoeira, and even people that have been studing for longer.

This book,(Capoeira, roots of the dance-fight-game)is fantasticaly full of usefull information for a capoeirist to have and know. It touchs on explanations of capoeira, and the different parts in capoeira(The game, the making of a mestre e.t.c) the instruments, and there significance. The History of capoeira, and old or former mestres(Masters). Also more advanced techniques for a truely dedicated capoeira student, even teachers(mestres/masters).

All in all this book is a must have guide to help any true capoeirist to learn, understand, and become better in there knowledge and understanding of movements."

Capoeira: History, Philosophy, Practice

Review

"This book presents a very good introduction to the only idigenous martial art of Brazil: Capoeira. Mestre Accordeon's aim of providing a written account of the roots and purpose of Capoeira are fully accomplished in this, his first book. If you are looking for a text book on Capoeira moves then this ISN'T what you are looking for!! This books focuses mostly on the spiritual aspects of the art and attempts to clarify some the misconseption and mystery surrounding Capoeira. It is written more in the style of a personal narration rather than a factual report, and hence conveys the warmth and intensity of the emotions that are associated with a life devoted to this unique art."

Capoeira and Candomble: Conformity and Resistance Through Afro-Brazilian Experience

Click here to buy it from Amazon

Review

"Capoeira is a unique music-dance-sport-play activity created by African slaves, and Candomble is a hybrid religion combining Catholic and African beliefs and practices. And while there are numerous books on Candomble and kindred Afro-American religions, none of them effectively combines Candomble and Capoeira. Actually, Capoeira and Candomble are closely tied to one another. Together, they make up a coherent form of life in Brazil within the current process of globalization about which there has been much ballyhoo, eulogies, and condemnation. This study involves the author's practice of and reflections on the arts of Capoeira and Candomble; it culminates in the idea of an "other logic," an alternative culture "logic," about which much lip service is being paid in academic circles, with little to no concrete details. This book, consequently, is one of a kind insofar as it bears on the interdependency of two Afro-Brazilian practices while grounding them in a theoretical framework and at the same time interrelating them with topics of great concern in the initial years of a new millennium: post-colonial and diaspora studies."

Capoeira: The History of an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art

Click here to buy it from Amazon

Review

"Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art now spreading over the rest of the world, and is the only sport from Brazil that seeks Olympic recognition. Originally the preserve of the underclasses in Brazilian society, capoeira is now practised amongst the middle-classes, and even taught as a sport in schools. The author explores the history of capoeira and explores the conflict between traditionalists, who view capoeira as their heritage descended from the maroons, a weapon to be used against injustice and repression; reformers, who wish to see the spread of the sport internationally; and academics, who are attempting to discover the true history of capoeira as opposed to the myth."
